The inverse scattering series is the only known multi-dimensional direct inversion procedure. As such, it has the potential to perform all the tasks associated with inversion while requiring only the measured reflection data and a chosen reference medium's properties. The reference medium is not the actual medium, nor is it updated to become the actual medium. We are investigating the ability of a subseries of the inverse series to locate reflectors at their correct depth without requiring the actual propagation velocity.
